PÁN, PANI, SLEČNA

The words pán and pani are mostly used with last names, professions and degrees:

Dobrý deň, pani Horvátová. Dovidenia, pán Slávik.

Frown To address anyone only with word pán is not typical, in contrast to English:

Prepáčte, neviete, kde je hotel Devín? (Excuse me, sir, where is the Hotel Devín?)

The word slečna refers to a young girl or an unmarried young woman, but it is not very used in the contemporary communication. It has been replaced with pani (like in English).

SOCIAL TITLES

It is very important to know how and when to properly use a person’s social title in Slovakia. When addressing e.g. a professor it is polite to use pán and pani, too (slečna is not used):

Dobrý deň, pani profesorka! Dobré ráno, pán inžinier!

Frown To address a person as e.g. doktorka or profesor (without pán or pani) would be very impolite.
