Personal pronouns

vyyou (group), you (formal)

on, ona, onohe, she, it

oni, onythey (masculina personal), they (feminine, neuter, animate / inanimate masculine gender)



vy is used:

- to adress to a group of people

- to adress to a person  whom we are on formal terms with (in formal speech)


Vy is used:

- to adress a person in formal speech in written form


oni is used:

- as a reference to masculine personal nouns

Róbert a Carlo = oni

- or to all genders together

Róbert a Zuzana = oni


ony is used:

- as a reference to masculine non-personal nouns, feminine and neuter nouns

Zuzana a Johanna = ony


Personal pronouns are mostly dropped because the verbs sufficiently express person:

Volám sa Peter. Som študent. → ja

Ako sa voláš? → ty


Personal pronouns are explicitely used when being compared or emphasised:

Ja sa volám Peter. Ako sa voláte vy?

Ja som zo Slovenska a on je z Česka.
